Maryland Deathfest Portrait, No. 1: Meet Jordan, John and Dave from Atlanta, Georgia. These dudes discovered a shared love of metal in a nerdy fraternity at Georgia Tech, which is about the nerdiest thing I’ve ever heard. (Go Dawgs, by the way.) They’re all working their ways up through physics and computers… things I don’t pretend to understand. But mostly, they came to MDF to see Electric Wizard.

All weekend long, Lars has met and been introduced to all sorts of awesome people at Maryland Deathfest, so he decided to ask them really basic questions about why they love metal, how they got into it and what they do support it.

Nor is the function of intellectuals to celebrate powerful elites. That’s what political operatives and partisan hacks are for. The issues on which Obama is wrong matter too much to shower him with effusive praise. That doesn’t mean withholding credit where it’s due. It does mean keeping achievements in context, and never apologizing for having pushed and cajoled and criticized Obama before he decided to do the right thing. His job is to do the right thing.
